About Karate

Karate

Karate was first introduced to Okinawa by a Chinese martial artist named Kusanku.  Karate was first known as Tode or China hand.  Tode was introduced to Okinawa in the late 18th or early 19th century by Okinawans who had studied in China or Chinese martial artist visiting Okinawa. Tode began to be referred to as Karate in the late 20th century.  Prior to 1879 most karate practitioners were of the Noble class and commoners were forbidden to practice or study karate.  During it's early development karate was practiced mainly as a form of self defense. Today karate is still practiced for its self protection techniques but it serves many other purposes. Through the practice of karate children learn leadership skills such as goal setting, better communication, team work, integrity, perseverance and a can do-never quit attitude.  We also strive to help children utilize the focus learned in karate to also improve school grades.  Children learn how to avoid potentially dangerous situations and become their very own bodyguards.  For adults the practice of karate offers a unique method of working out, relieving stress and improving your performance in other areas of life.  If you are looking for the ultimate mind body workout that is always challenging, never boring and easy to learn but difficult to master then karate training if for you.
