F.A.Q.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the differences between a Martial Arts School and a Gym?

Our programs appeal to kids, families, and adults. Many health clubs do not have programs that cater to the whole family. We are in the life skills business, not the fitness business. This does not mean that you will not become fit while practicing Martial Arts. Our classes will help you gain flexibility, tone muscles, improve cardiovascular function and reduce stress. We will be by your side every class that you attend. Qualified instructors will motivate you to achieve your all, from white belt to advanced black belt.

I'm out of shape and have not worked out in years. Will I be able to do Martial Arts?

People of all ages and fitness levels can participate in our programs. Our expert instructors will slowly bring you back to top shape. The most important thing for you to remember is that everyone was a beginner at some time. Hundreds of people just like you start a program everyday.

Will I have to fight with black belts or other students?

First of all lets start by defining the difference between fighting and sparring. Fighting is when you are involved in an altercation with another individual without your consent. Sparring or kumite in Japenese is sport fighting with the consent of both individuals This type of fighting is usually done with a certain set of rules. At Pelletier Academy we practice sparring concepts and light contact sparring in general classes. You will not be forced to spar as you are welcome to observe during sparring practice if you do not feel that it is for you. Most of our students love drills and light touch sparring. We do have special classes for those who are interested in competing and taking this aspect of training to a higher level.

Do I have to take exams infront of other people?

Our exams are actually called reviews and we take them as a group. Although it is important for students to meet standards at each belt level, this does not have to be a stressful  situation. Our students love review days. These review days are done monthly and they are not much different than any other class.

Will I get hurt practicing Martial Arts?

Our classes are geared towards your safety in mind. Other than an occasional bump or bruise, the injury rate in our classes are almost zero and that's where we want to keep it. No one would enjoy coming back to class on a regular basis if it was painful to do so. Your chances of getting injured are higher playing tennis than doing our classes.

Do I have to sign up for a specific amount of time?

No, our classes are paid month by month. We want students to stay with our programs, because of great service and exciting classes not because of long term contracts.

How long will it take to achieve Black Belt and how many days per week do I have to attend?

It is best if you can attend at least two one hour classes per week. Most students can reach black belt in three years. Classes are available morning, evening, and weekends.
